JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson police say they don’t know a motive for the death of local Jackson rapper Lil Lonnie.
Jackson police arrested and charged two men in connection to the shooting death of 21-year-old Lonnie Taylor in April of 2018.
21-year-old Monya Davis was being held in Texas and was extradited two weeks ago. He appeared for his initial court appearance on the morning of Monday, April 22, and was denied bond.
21-year-old Antoine Carr was also arrested in Austin, Texas in March. He was extradited earlier this week after being held there. He was denied bond at his initial court appearance Wednesday.
The shooting happened on Montebello Drive in Jackson back in late April of 2018.
Police say additional arrests are expected.
“The investigation is ongoing so it’s unclear exactly what took place," said JPD Chief James Davis. "It doesn’t appear to be robbery.”
22-year-old Lonnie Montrel Taylor was a well-known rapper in Jackson who goes by the name “Lil Lonnie”.
On April 30th, 2018 shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to Montebello Drive where a car had crashed into the front of a home in north Jackson.
Taylor was driving the car when it crashed and had been shot multiple times. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Lil Lonne’s death rocked the community and he was remembered for the impact he had on this city and with music.
Many were in disbelief that the young artist with so much to say, has been silenced.
"I think that was really tragic 'cause he was out here, he was working, he was out here showing his love for the folks," said friend Carl Jacobs. "He was out here just trying to make his own career better."
Many well-known rappers took to Twitter to send their condolences to the rapper and his family.
“It gives closure to the community and also closure to his family," said Chief Davis. "He did a lot of positive things, I understand, for the community.”
