JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson State pounded out 19 hits and crushed Mississippi Valley State 19-3 Saturday afternoon to complete the series sweep on Senior Day and 2019 Baseball Homecoming. The Tigers have won 13 in a row.
The contest was ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Jackson State improves to 25-18 and 12-6 in the SWAC, while MVSU falls to 6-21 and 5-12 in the conference.
The Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to seize control.
Raul Hernandez put the Tigers on board with an RBI single up the middle and Jaylyn Williams followed that up with an RBI double down the left field line. Wesley Reyes then added a two-RBI double through the left side and the Tigers led 4-0.
Tyler Culpepper scored on an MVSU error, Chandler Dillard added an RBI single and Equon Smith came through with a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring in the first inning.
Culpepper finished 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and also scored three times. Chris Prentiss batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and scored two runs. Smith finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and Reyes went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs.
Justin Moore also went 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI in his lone at-bat.
The Tigers received a great pitching performance from Anthony Becerra. He tossed 6.0 innings and scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned) and two walks and fanned seven batters. He also induced eight fly outs.
The Tigers host Nicholls State Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning to conference action next weekend at Alabama State.
The Jackson State Division of Athletics held its inaugural Baseball Homecoming. The 1977 and 1978 teams were honored prior to the game.
The 1978 team won 52 games, which is still a program record.
