VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - Vicksburg police have arrested a teen involved in a drive-by shooting which sent one 18-year-old to the hospital. One other suspect is still at large.
The drive-by occurred Friday night around 10:09 p.m. at the JP & K Foods Convenience Store in Vicksburg. Authorities found 18-year-old Jamario Hawkins on the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The teenager told police that he was walking in the area of Bowmar Avenue and Halls Ferry Road when a gray Dodge Charger passed him and gunshots came from the car.
Hawkins said that he had gotten into an argument with some guys earlier in the night but he did not think they would come back for him.
Police were able to find out that the individuals Hawkens had fought with were 18-year-old Darion Turner and 20-year-old Tony Dewayne Smoots Jr.
Witnesses say that the fight between the two young men and Dawkins had gotten physical. After the fight Turner and Smoots went to the Dodge Charger, and, when speeding off, several gunshots were fired from the vehicle.
After being shot, Hawkins was taken to Merit Health Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.
Darion Turner was arrested at his home on April 22nd around 9 a.m. He will appear in court April 24th to face charges of drive-by shooting and aggravated assault.
Vicksburg Police say that Tony Smoots Jr. is still at large.
