PEARL, MS (WLBT) - When you win a high school state championship, you’re bound to have a few players sign to play at the next level. The Pearl lady pirates had 3 athletes sign to play college ball. One of those made school history.
Jayla Alexander signed with Ole Miss today, becoming the first girls basketball player from pearl to sign with an SEC program.
The guard averaged 19.1 points per game during her senior campaign.
Jayla said she’s on board with Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s plan and is ready to start playing in Oxford.
“She has a vision and she isn’t scared of working hard,” Alexander said about Coach Yo. She knows what it’s going to take and she knows it’s not going to be easy, so I’m down for that."
Coach Yo said signing players from Mississippi is something that has been important to her since the beginning.
“When I took over the job and I got with my staff, we thought it was important to really get the best talent to stay at home,” Coach Yo said. “I’m really looking forward to keeping that in state talent at home.”
