JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - “All of a sudden we heard this crashing sound, and half the house has been torn up!”
During this weekends storms a 300-year-old tree collapsed on the side of a house in Edwards, leaving the homeowner to pick up the pieces, but, luckily, nobody was hurt.
The homeowner was so shaken up that he chose not to speak on camera, but recalls the devastating moment it happened.
“I sat down to watch some television and the next thing I know, I hear this noise and the tree had come down and destroyed the whole house over there.”
The house is over 150 years old, and the homeowner says it has never seen damage like this.
“It destroyed the bathroom upstairs, the bedroom, and the whole roof on the kitchen is all damaged.”
Shocked neighbors tell me they have never seen anything like this in their community.
“I have never seen something this devastating before. We get some rain but never nothing like this,” said Kendarius Armstrong.
“I was actually really saddened, cause they are good people. I’m glad they are alive. They are blessed,” added Kyndaria Armstrong.
Ricky Moore is the Hinds County Emergency Operations Center Director.
“If you get a huge gust of wind like we did from the storms, it can take down some trees. Edwards has some beautiful big trees. It is such a shame that the tree came down and hit the house,” said Moore.
He reminds us to always stay alert, and be prepared for severe weather. “People need to have kits and their home plans for emergency weather.”
