JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Families of organ donors and recipients are showing their appreciation for the gift of life.
Friday, the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency held their Legacy Day event at University Medical Center.
Legacy Day is held every year to honor those that gave organs, eyes or tissue donations.
The names of donors in the past year, were read as part of the ceremony.
There was also a balloon release.
Organ donation advocates say by sharing your organs, it's possible to save multiple lives.
Officer Allen Harper, a Jackson Police officer who died in a motorcycle accident in 2017, had his organs donated, and saved 11 lives.
Officer Harper’s widow Shaquita Harper said, “I think he would be smiling he would probably be here laughing joking enjoying his day, but I encourage other people to do this because you don’t know whose life you might be saving. You might be in a position where you need someone to donate to you and what if someone says no so I think to receive you have to give back.”
April is national Donate Life month.
During this time they encourage people to reflect on the hope and life made possible through organ, eye and tissue donations.
