JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -The Dixie National Rodeo festivities have officially begun!
Some of the best riders in the nation are in the Capitol City this week for the 54th annual Dixie National Rodeo.
People from all across the state are getting ready. The rodeo is 7 days long, but the livestock shows run nearly a month long.
The Dixie National horse paint show is one of the most exciting events for horse lovers all across the Magnolia state.
Lucy Mckenzie has competed since she was 7-years-old, and this year she is competing in the Dixie National paint show, and says her favorite part is the family environment.
“The family atmosphere and each barn has their own family. So you have your family and your horses," said Mckenzie.
McKenzie says she couldn't do it without her best friend and riding buddy, Lucky.
“It’s a lot of fun. We have that bond and that team work. We are a team," says Mckenzie.
Betty Bermond has been training with her husband for over 20 years, and has clients from all over the country.
“We have people from Iowa, Florida. We travel to put point on our horses and it is great competition and very family oriented.”
Bermond says this sport requires a lot of hard work and responsibility, but in the end it’s extremely rewarding.
“It is a hard life, but it’s a fun life," said Bermond.
Winners who compete in the Dixie National horse paint show will receive plaques, belt buckles, and prize money.
