HUNTINGTON, WV (WLBT) - The Lady Eagles finished on top at Marshall, coming away with another conference win against the Thundering Herd to the tune of 64-52 in Henderson Center.
Southern Miss had a hot start and kept it going throughout the bout with Marshall. The Lady Eagles (11-10, 3-5) won the tip, scored the first points, and came away with the win, finishing the game with 12 points up on the Herd.
The first quarter was neck and neck between the Herd and Southern Miss, ending with the Lady Eagles up by one. Southern Miss overpowered them in that second quarter, 13-8, going into the half up by six. The third quarter was a close battle, the Herd breathing down USM's neck, but the Lady Eagles had their largest lead of the game, 13 points, at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter was a little hairy at times, with Marshall putting up five good shots, two of them 3-pointers, but it was nothing Southern Miss couldn't handle. The Lady Eagles had the win in the end and was able to run out the clock, declaring victory over the Thundering Herd.
Four Eagles finished with double-figure shooting, including Shonte Hailes, Megan Brown, Alarie Mayze, and Respect Leaphart. Brown led the team with 17 points, led the team in assists with five along with Shonte Hailes, and led the team in rebounds with seven along with Kelsey Jones. Alarie Mayze played 39 minutes and Hailes saw 37 minutes on the floor. The Lady Eagles went 50 percent or better from the field, the 3-point line, and the free throw line. From the 3-point line, they were at 50 percent (4-for-8), they were 58.7 percent from the field (27-for-46), and 54.5 percent from the charity stripe (6-for-11). Southern Miss outrebounded the Herd 31 to 26, and had 18 assists to Marshall's 11. The Lady Eagles had success from the paint, scoring 36 points.
The Lady Eagles' second conference road trip of the season came to an exciting end against the Herd, and will return to Hattiesburg with two more road and conference wins under their belts. One of the toughest road trips on the schedule became two of the hardest-fought games for the women of Lady Eagle basketball.
Overall on the weekend, Respect Leaphart and Kelsey Jones each had a double-double, Leaphart finished both games with double-figure shooting, as did Megan Brown. Shonte Hailes had a total of 12 assists, Leaphart had a total of 37 points, and the Lady Eagles went a combined 133-108 points against their opponents.
The Lady Eagles return home to Hattiesburg where they will play both Floridian members of Conference USA next; FIU on the 31st of January to close out the month, and starting off February against Florida Atlantic.
