JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Florida-based moving company with ties to Flowood faces serious charges after assistance from a 3 On Your Side investigation.
John O’Hara, president of the Better Business Bureau Serving Mississippi, said others who had been taken advantage of by Spartan Van Lines searched for the company and ended up finding our story.
As a result, they reached out to him and he was able to pass that information to investigators with the Florida Attorney General’s office.
In July of 2018, 3 On Your Side investigated Spartan after one of its customers, Josh Taffer, came forward with concerns about the company and allegations of fraud and forgery.
Taffer said he hired the company to move his family from North Carolina to Mississippi, and a representative promised him that the total cost to him would be around $5,000.
That price tripled after Spartan had already picked up Taffer’s belongings, and the company refused to give any of that back until he paid.
After our story aired, Taffer and the company reached an agreement: he got his furniture back and only had to pay the original fee.
Now Spartan and its owner face seven counts in a federal complaint filed by the Florida Attorney General’s office, charges that include deceptive business practices and advertising violations.
