JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - This week’s Mississippi Strong nominee has shown much love and dedication to his south Jackson neighborhood.
James Davis spends hours with the youth each week, working with the South Jackson Eagles football team.
He said he wants to provide kids in the area with opportunities and a positive outlet to keep them out of trouble. So far, it seems to be working.
He’s expanded his involvement with the league to include a yearly awards banquet and a post season tournament, which brings in teams from other states.
Davis said his love for south Jackson and the residents drives him to improve the quality of life for others in his neighborhood.
“They don’t have many resources around here or a lot of positive things to do," said Davis. "When they find it, we want the parents to gravitate to it and stick with it. It’s so easy to find trouble and negativity in this community right now, but with our group and others, we’re working on that to change the outlook of south Jackson and help the youth.”
Davis is hoping to work with the city to implement new football fields at Sykes Park, where his team is based out of.
He used this Martin Luther King holiday to help clean up a dilapidated property on Cooper Road, with the help of some of his football players and other community leaders.
