HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Former Hinds County deputy Richard Spooner is entering the race for Hinds County Sheriff.
He formally announced his candidacy Friday, Jan. 11 with a concert and fundraiser at the Jackson Hilton Hotel.
Spooner says 28 years of experience in law enforcement make him a qualified candidate.
He served as a United States Marine and in several capacities with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.
For 14 years, he was the supervisor over the Hinds County Narcotics Unit, he also served as a member of the Hinds County S.W.A.T. team for 19 years.
Also in the running; the current sheriff, Victor Mason, has filed his paperwork and is seeking re-election for a second term.
Former Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance has also entered the race as well as Les Tannehill.
