Starkville, MS (WLBT) - Teaira McCowan was named to the midseason top 25 for the John Wooden Award on Wednesday night. The senior leads the No. 7/6 Mississippi State women’s basketball team in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (13.0 rpg) and blocked shots (2.7 bpg).
McCowan has already broken the MSU career records for rebounds (1,210) and double-doubles (51) this season and picked up two weekly conference honors. She is among the nation’s leaders in double-doubles (12 – 3rd), field goal percentage (68.7 percent – 4th) and rebounding (3rd).
The Brenham, Texas, native has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season. She is blocking shots at the highest rate of any season of her career while fouling at the lowest rate of her career (2.4 fouls per game).
Among active players, she is third in the country in career rebounds, fourth in double-doubles, eighth in blocks and 40th in total points.
The top 25 will be pared down to 20 later in the season before a list of 15 finalists is revealed ahead of the NCAA tournament. The Wooden Award winner will be announced at the College Basketball Awards on April 12.
