JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - If you build it, they will come. That’s what the The City of Flowood is hoping when they open a new hotel in the near future.
The property is still under construction, but when it’s finished, they expect it could have widespread economic impacts.
The city, which will own the property, is hoping the new hotel will become a one-of-a-kind destination for family vacations and businesses.
It’s a $50 million dollar project, and will have a 200 room luxury hotel connected to a 54,000 square foot conference center.
The city is promoting this as a premier destination for groups to meet.
There will also be an 18-hole golf course, which is currently going through a major renovation.
The new destination will have meeting spaces that duplicate to what’s already being offered in Jackson, but officials in the county and city said that can be a good thing when it comes to economic impacts.
“I hope maybe one day we will be at a point where we’ll need all the facilities to handle different conferences and things that may be going on. Many other cities you travel around, and they offer many conferences going on at one time.”
The City of Flowood will be discussing a height variance for the hotel at their board of aldermen meeting on Monday.
There is a 90-foot limit for hotels in the area, restricted by the FAA because of its proximity to the airport.
They are trying to go up to 120-feet with the hotel, so there will be a public hearing to determine if there is any objection to that request.
