PELAHATCHIE, MS (WLBT) - Toys for Tots that serves Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties has almost 8,000 registrations from families, but the organization is short of 1,500 toys for children this year. With Christmas being next week, there’s a desperate call for help.
Leaders say registrations have doubled over the past two years. They have never had this many children, and there has never been a shortage of toys.
The biggest reason for the drop in donations is the organization lost its biggest corporate sponsor, Toys R Us. The retail giant closed its doors across the country earlier this year. Toys for Tots would receive money and toy donations from the toy chain.
Mary Quick, coordinator with Toys for Tots, said “they were a major contributor to us for years. Toys R Us closing really hurt us.”
The biggest need for Toys for Tots is toys for boys and girls, ages 0 to 2 and 10 to 12.
“Mississippi has always been known to be the most generous giving state when natural disasters happen in other areas," said Quick. “This year, our own community needs that generosity. So, please if you can help us give these children a Merry Christmas.”
