LEE COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A child died after he was hit by a car while getting on a school bus Wednesday morning in Lee County.

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green identified the child as Dalen Thomas, 9.

The nine-year-old student was transported by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was later airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN, where he later died from his injuries sustained in the crash.

22-year-old Hunter Newman, of Marietta, was formally charged with one count of aggravated assault. His bond was set at $10,000.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Highway Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team.

The child was a student at Baldwyn Elementary School.

The Baldwyn School District released the following statement:

"With the recent tragic accident, Baldwyn School District will be offering counseling in partnership with the Family Resource Center, Region III, and local ministers on site throughout the rest of the school week. The safety of our students will continue to be our number one priority. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of this tragic accident," said Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven.

“The bus was properly stopped when a truck hit the student,” said Baldwyn School District Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven. “We are asking for prayers for the family and for the school.”

At the time of the accident, four students were on the school bus, MHP said.

The assistant superintendent tells WTVA the school district made arrangements to get the other four students to school.
