JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -JSU introduced the men’s and women’s team to a crowd of students and alumni Sunday at their Hoop Madness.
Jackson State was bit hard by the injury bug last season and there are plenty of new faces on the men’s team -- a factor Coach Wayne Brent hopes will get more W’s in the win column.
“We got 20 total guys and we got probably four or five back from last year, so we probably got about 15 new guys," said Brent. “It’s going to be a real exciting year. You know this is the first time I’ve had a chance to smile with a group. I’m excited. I love coming to practice with them. I think the biggest thing is just being able to go on the floor each and every morning and have 15-16 guys to work with compared to having anywhere from 6 ,7 to 8 guys to work with at this time of the year.”
Women’s coach Tomekia Reed is a new face in the athletic department and is also doing well recruiting -- signing a high profile player over FaceTime.
“Right now, our newcomers are really doing a great job," said Reed. “We signed a point guard from Brooklyn, New York. We have a player right here from Jim Hill High School who’s doing really well for us and then we return some core players -- that were leading scorers last year -- who are doing a really good job. I’m really excited about the mesh we have going right now.”
The Tigers' basketball teams start their season on November 6 against Louisiana Monroe.
