JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -A bridge in south Jackson that had been reduced to one lane is now closed to all traffic. It’s on Terry Road over Caney Creek, between Savanna Street and Elton Road.
The bridge itself isn’t the problem. The issue is a concrete ditch that runs alongside the road, at the north approach. The ditch’s concrete sides and bottom have broken-up, leading to major erosion that is now eating into the asphalt on Terry Road. Even some of the orange barrels placed around the hazard have fallen victim, landing down in the ditch.
For people who live nearby, it’s a big headache.
“It’s causing job delays,” says Shameka Fox, who lives off Terry Road and frequently uses the bridge on her way to Byram. “You have to drive longer before you get to your destination.”
Charles Williams, engineering manager in the city’s Public Works Department, tells 3 On Your Side that the Mississippi Office of State Aid inspected the bridge and requested that it be closed immediately. He says the city is working on a plan to get it repaired and back open within the next four months.
