JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Rankin County’s olympic champion will get recognized by anyone who travels Highway 25 in Sand Hill.
On Thursday morning, the Rankin County Board of Supervisors approved providing $4,500 for a billboard-style sign that will recognize Torie Bowie. It will be erected on Highway 25 near Highway 43, and will welcome people to Sand Hill, home of the champion track athlete.
Rankin County lawmakers were instrumental in getting the legislature to approve the idea.
No word yet on when the sign will go up, but board members say the they’re happy to recognize the winner of gold, silver and bronze medals in the 2016 summer olympics.
“I think she’s a superstar. From Mississippi or from the United States, but she’s also our superstar, Pisgah and Sand Hill,” says Rankin County District 4 Supervisor Steve Gaines. "She’s just an icon for our community. No one from Mississippi has ever won those three medals and I don’t think there will ever be again.”
MDOT will oversee all aspects of the Torie Bowie sign.
