BRANDON, MS (WLBT) - Your undefeated, neighboring rival who has beat you in each of the last two seasons comes to your house Friday night. The motivation is there for Brandon.
“Expect a big game from them (Northwest Rankin) every year,” says senior offensive lineman Jack Green. “They’re really talented, undefeated coming to our house. So yeah, we’re pretty juiced and excited for Friday night.”
Junior quarterback Will Rogers describes past games against the Cougars as, “Very physical, very emotional game."
“Lots of talking going on in the game so you know it’s going to be a good game Friday,” added Rogers.
The Bulldogs defense needs to slow down Northwest Rankin’s high-powered offense. Brandon’s defense calls themselves “the chain gang”, and allowed just 138 yards in a win over Tupelo last week.
“We like to have that swagger on the field,” says senior linebacker Dakara Shoto. “We believe that we’re the best defense in the state.”
But the Bulldogs are not all defense. Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, an Ole Miss commit, leads the state in receiving yards through 4 weeks.
“Jonathan is the best player I’ve ever coached,” says Brandon head coach Tyler Peterson. “You catch yourself out here some days (stunned) over some plays that he makes. And you just shake your head and think, just enjoy it while you have it.”
Coach Peterson’s message to his team this week: enjoy the moment under those Friday night lights.
“It’s the kind of atmosphere that not a lot of schools get to play in,” says Peterson. “So just soak it up, enjoy it, go play hard, and hopefully come out on top.”
