BOONE, NC (WLBT) - Appalachian State says they’re planning on hosting Saturday’s football game with Southern Miss as scheduled for now.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to play at Appalachian State, located in Boone, North Carolina, Saturday at 3:30 PM EST. But the university says they are in close communication with the National Weather Service and its campus emergency management team tracking Hurricane Florence.

Parts of North Carolina are facing mandatory evacuations as the Category 4 hurricane churns in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s expected the state will begin experiencing heavy winds Thursday, ahead of Florence’s expected landfall Friday.

Appalachian State, in a press release, says the university “... will make the best decision possible for our campus, fans and visiting team.”

Scheduled home games Saturday at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State have already been canceled.
