JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The first numbers are in on sports betting in Mississippi, and the future could be bright for this revenue generator.
State gaming officials say gamblers bet just under 10 million dollars on their team to win, in the first 34 days of sports betting in our state.
Casinos in the Vicksburg market say it’s an early hit.
“If you had been here Saturday, we had 14 people waiting in line before we were even open,” said Ameristar Casino Vice President and General Manager Jared Hardy.
Of course the revenue the state makes off the initial bets will be much less than the amount wagered.
Casino’s earn about 5 percent off the bet. The state gets an 8 percent tax on the casino’s winnings.
Those in the gaming industry say a strong sports betting start is promising.
“The thing that got us most excited both on Friday, Saturday and Sunday was the number of new faces we’re seeing.," added Hardy. "I think the people here in Mississippi are energized by the opportunity to be able to bet on their favorite teams. They’re coming out placing wagers and enjoying themselves.”
It could be 6-to-8 months before gaming officials get an idea of how much sports betting could generate in revneues annually, but they say the future is looking bright.
