JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - It's down to two candidates to succeed retiring Congressman Chip Pickering in Mississippi's 3rd Congressional District which stretches across the central part of the state.

Gregg Harper, a 1978 graduate of Mississippi College, who also got his law degree from Ole Miss in 1981, is the Republican nominee.  He faces Joel Gill, a veteran of 38 years in the cattle business and second term alderman in his home town of Pickens, is the Democratic nominee.

Harper says, when asked about the most important reason he should be elected, says "I really do believe that Congress is a true position of service, and requires somebody that wants to try to help people, with their problems that they are dealing with, and we are committed to doing that."

Gill responds to the same question this way.

"I help bring a business experience, with 38 years in the cattle business, I am a twice elected public official, being an alderman in the town of Pickens, Gill said."

Whoever gets the most votes November 4th, will replace Chip Pickering in Congress in January.
