Councilman Stokes responds to Marine Street shootings

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson city leader is lashing out at young criminals.

Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes said Chicago-type gang activity will not be tolerated in the capitol city.

Stokes held a news conference Wednesday morning on Marine Street. That is the location of a violent home invasion.

Two black males kicked in the door of a home Monday night. They demanded money and then began shooting. Two people were shot multiple times. Two others escaped unharmed.

Councilman Stokes is calling for serious penalties, "I'm calling on the District Attorney's office, District Attorney Smith, the chief of police, the mayor and everyone else to stop this by making some examples out of these young people that think that to commit these types of crimes is fun and games. We need to make sure we address gangs again in the city of Jackson, because they are getting out of control."

Suspects have been arrested in connection with Monday night's Marine Street home invasion and shooting. Meanwhile Councilman Stokes wants more police presence in his ward to help ease fears.
