Governor Barbour wants legislators to cut spending

Governor Haley Barbour wants legislators and state agency directors to cut spending.

The reason for this request state tax commission records show revenues were behind estimates for the first quarter of the fiscal year. Barbour wants agencies to trim two percent from the current year's budget and cut four percent for the next fiscal year.

Colonel J.K. Stringer Jr., Executive Director for the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, gave WLBT this statement in response to the governor's request.

"We must take action now to protect our state's financial position. Agency heads will have time to evaluate their budgets and operations and make recommendations that will trim their costs while keeping to a minimum the compromising of services to our citizens," said Stringer Jr.
