JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Metrocenter Mall is closing and that means the DMV office at that location is also shutting down this week.
If you've had to visit a driver's license facility you know it is an inefficient operation and a great example of government dysfunction. Instead of reducing the number of offices, the Department of Public Safety needs to open more locations, especially in the more populated areas like Metro Jackson.
In fact, each of the five counties in the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area (Copiah, Hinds, Madison, Rankin and Simpson counties) need at least one driver service location.
Before moving back to Mississippi, I lived in four states; Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Arkansas. Each time I moved, I had to get a new driver's license. And when I moved back to Mississippi, I had to get a Mississippi license. Mississippi was by far the most difficult and most time consuming. I knew what to expect, but imagine the impression this creates for someone relocating to our state.
It simply reinforces the common perception that our state is deserving of our consistent bottom of the list rankings.
Some people blame the issue on employee attrition or funding cuts by the state legislature. If that is the case, then we should all contact our state representatives and tell them to fix this broken model. Or maybe we should have them go wait in line for several hours and experience it first-hand… that should do it.
Public Safety officials and state leaders need to address this in the next legislative session.
Until improvements are made, pack your patience and be prepared to wait… and wait… and wait.
