HATTIESBURG, MS (WLBT) - Press release from Southern Miss.
Four of the top five pass catchers from last season's Southern Miss squad are gone, but that doesn't mean the cupboard was left bare. In fact, this group might be better when all things are said done.
While the Golden Eagles lost top receiver Korey Robertson, who declared early for the NFL after tallying 76 catches for 1,106 yards and 12 touchdown receptions, along with Allenzae Staggers, Isaiah Jones and Ito Smith, the return of sophomores Jaylond Adams (Adamsville, Ala.) and Quez Watkins (Athens, Ala.) as the top players at that position look to fill that void left from last fall.
Third-year coach Jay Hopson has been impressed with this group thus far in the preseason, after the Golden Eagles went through their third practice of camp on Monday morning – the first in shoulder pads and shorts.
"This receiving corps is really physical, strong and a fast group," said Hopson. "You are not a lot of the times blessed with that at receiver, but they have an edge about them, so I like that. We just have to keep getting better and better every day."
In fact, Hopson believes the group is a little bit better in all three qualities that Hopson mentioned than last year's group, which also includes transfer De'Michael Harris (Vicksburg, Miss.), junior Trevor Terry (Long Beach, Miss.) and sophomore Tim Jones (Florence, Miss.) to name just a few.
