20 people without homes after massive Ridgeland apartment fire

RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) - Twenty people are without a home after a massive fire ripped though 24 units at the Sunchase Apartments in Ridgeland.

Two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. One firefighter twisted his foot and the other was hit by debris. Both were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay.

No other injuries were reported.

"All of the neighbors from my building," said Tara Heflin. "We started pounding on doors, trying to get people up and out. We weren't sure if the apartment involved had people in it and one of the neighbors kicking the door in and it was amazing what everybody did."

Witnesses say the fire spread so quickly, they barely had time to react.

"It just made me realize how one minute you have everything and then all of the sudden you have nothing," said Tommie Hannaford. "I was able to walk to certain spot just to see and it's a miracle that they were able to get everybody out. It was just a miracle."

The Red Cross is stepping in to help shelter and feed those displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
