JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

For the first time in 30 years, a new airline is taking flight in Jackson.

This is the first time a new airline has joined JCAA since 1997.

Jackson's Mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba was at the ribbon cutting celebrating Via Air's first flight from Jackson.

"We've been able to accomplish quite a few things that have been held up for quite some time. I think we have a good group of individuals who are seriously concerned with the best interests of our airports, and seriously concerned with the best interests of Jackson," said Mayor Lumumba.

Via Air has six jets at JAN that go back and forth between Jackson and Orlando.

The flights are $99 each way, and each plane holds 50 people.

"I feel fantastic," exclaimed Donald Bowman, the Director of Planning and Business Development with Via Air. "The load factors are fantastic out of Jackson, which is a very good sign when your very first flight is near 50 percent, which is generally unheard of in the industry. So we're excited!"

The setup is perfect for businesspeople like Janice Whirl, who was on Via Air's first flight from Orlando to Jackson.

"We usually fly Frontier, but this one came up and it was cheaper," said Whirl.

It's also great for frequent vacationers like Miranda Fulton, who boarded the first Via Air flight from Jackson to Orlando.

"I had no idea what it was, I'd never even heard of it. But I'm glad we have it now," said Fulton. "We try to go like once every pretty much, but this is our first time coming back in a while, so we're pretty excited."

Right now, they're only flying on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays; but they're already looking into buying more jets and expanding.

"It was very nice, people were very helpful. The stewardess was wonderful, the pilot was wonderful. I'd fly it again, definitely," said Whirl.

Via Air flies to the Orlando Sanford International Airport, not MCO.
