Jackson's Soulful Music Concert & Event Series revving up this weekend

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

The Jackson Soulful Music Concerts and Events Series started in May but will go on until September. Parks and Rec director, Ison Harris teamed up with the city of Jackson to get some foot traffic and revenue into the city.

"Last year we were talking about anything that we can possibly bring new revenue into the city, and so when we went through the budget process, last year, we actually introduced this idea," said Harris. "And the city council agreed that this would be a really neat thing and it's just kind of a fulfillment of what we were doing. We actually budgeted at that point."

And I know what you're thinking. How can the city afford a series of community events and concerts when we have bigger issues to address? Several big name sponsors like iHeart Media, Trustmark, and the Jackson Medical Mall are sponsors of Blues in the Park this Fathers Day.

"Typically, we reached out and had certain levels that we were requested from different sponsors and we have several sponsors that have stepped up to those levels to help us out," added Harris. "The sponsors allocate will help pay for artists, pay for production costs, like paying for the stages, and the writers for the artists, and stuff like that."

This weekend kicks off the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament, a charity for junior golf programs in the city of Jackson. After that, there will be the series first concert, Blues in the Park, which is a free concert open to the public on Fathers Day. Big name acts like Bobby Rush, Betty Wright, Zac Harmon, and Dexter Allen will be the artists there.
