JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

A former NCAA basketball standout and local businessman has moved into the runoff with Michael Guest.

Monday night, Whit Hughes greeted his supporters at the Embassy Suites in Ridgeland. Hughes said his goal is to outwork the other candidates in the race, which he believes led to his success to move on in the race in the first place.

Promising to push his conservative values if elected, Hughes said he wants to cut taxes and create more transparency in Washington if elected.

Hughes is the former chief development officer of Baptist Health Systems. He was joined with his wife Shelly and three children on stage as he told the crowd how he plans to move forward over the next few weeks.

"I really feel like i have an understanding of what voters want and it's very clear to me they want leaders with character and integrity," Hughes said. "But more than that, they want strong leaders with sharp elbows and some back bone leaders that will put principles our politics and will drive the kind of conservative legislation that is meaningful to me and to you."

Hughes says he visited all 24 counties during his campaign, and some days he went to all the counties in 24 hours.

He says he will continue to visit with voters across the state, discussing the issues and how they want him to represent them in Washington, if elected.
