VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) -

Two men are facing capital murder charges after a home invasion turned deadly in Vicksburg.

20-year-old Keante Baker and 18-year-old De'Arris Thomas, charged with capital murder, were both given bonds of $750,000.

When asked did you contribute to your friend's murder, Keante Rashad Baker said, “No.”

Baker walked out of court after his initial appearance denying he shot and killed his friend Deangelo Fields Saturday night during an attempted home invasion and robbery on Valley Street.

The other suspect in this case, De'arris Thomas, didn't answer any questions about his involvement in the crime.

“The frustrating thing about the whole ordeal is young people with guns and they don't know what to do with them,” said Investigator Johnnie Edwards.

According to Vicksburg police, Fields and the two suspects, all friends, attempted to rob a home when the homeowner saw them on his surveillance camera and shot at the men, but missed.

Police say as the intruders were running away from the home, Keante Baker reportedly fired back and the bullet hit Fields, killing him.

“That is the reason they are charged with capital murder," said Edwards. "They participated in the crime, they discussed the crime and we know they went there to rob the homeowner.”

Andrew Thomas says he is cousins with De'Arris Thomas. He said although he feels his family member shouldn't be charged with capital murder, he's still in shock about what happened.

“For my cousin, that was one of his best friends and to be getting charged with shooting, that is hurtful as well," said Andrew Thomas. "The whole situation to me is awful and I wish I never would never would've happened.”

Marcie Parson also lives in the area and she says this violence has to stop.

“With the rate of black on black crime, to see that happen it's sad," said Parson.
