MADISON, MS (WLBT) -

On Memorial Day, we honor those veterans who paid the ultimate price as well as the ones who have returned home. But another way to honor them is through a tough workout.

But for one former veteran, that's just another way to honor the guys that came before him this Memorial Day. The Murph Challenge is an annual fundraiser that comes with a heavy bargain.

A 20 pound weighted vest, a 2 mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups and 300 squats.

Jeffery Turnage, an Army National Guard veteran, has been doing Crossfit for over six months. He also found a way on Memorial Day to honor the vets that came before him.

"The purpose of this workout is to remember the veterans who have come before us. It was named after a military officer, named Michael P. Murphy, he made the ultimate sacrifice, in the line of duty, so that we could do what it is that we do on a day to day basis.Today, during the workout, it was getting tough, and what kept pushing me through, is remembering those guys that came before me, and that what they did required a lot out of them," said Turnage.

Michael P. Murphy's name should sound familiar, his story prompted even a movie to be made about him. "The Lone Survivor," a movie about Murphy, showed how the former Navy Seal sacrificed himself in Afghanistan while signaling for support for his team while being surrounded by Taliban forces.

This challenge is actually the workout he would do to stay in shape. And it's obviously no cake walk.

"Pretty gut wrenching exhaustion. I think I lied in a puddle of sweat for about 20, 30 minutes before I could manage to lift my head, look around and see where everyone else was at. Any other day is just a workout, but once you catch your breath and come back to your senses and you remember, a workout like Murph, you didn't just do it for yourself, you did it to commemorate those veterans who came before us," said Turnage.
