JACKSON, Miss (AP) -

Professors at a Mississippi college have received two National Science Foundation grants aimed at strengthening science instruction at historically black colleges and universities.

Tougaloo College says $300,000 is being awarded to chemistry professor Bidisha Sengupta. Her project aims to examine biochemical links between sleep, diet and Alzheimer's disease over the next three years.

Sengupta and fellow chemistry professor George Armstrong are getting $400,000 to further their work on changing the school's chemistry curriculum. They want to incorporate what's called process oriented guided inquiry learning.

Students work in self-managed small teams with teachers mainly serving as facilitators under the method. The idea is for students to reach their own understanding of concepts, while building logical thinking and teamwork skills.
