Canton Public School District Board of Trustees has appointed former CPSD superintendent Dwight Luckett, Sr. as the district’s interim superintendent.

Luckett was highly recommended by the Mississippi School Boards Association.

“ I recommend that out of an abundance of caution the Canton School District school board appoint Dwight Luckett as the interim superintendent," said Mike Waldrop, MSBA Executive Director. "Dwight Luckett, having previously served as the superintendent of the Canton School District and the former interim superintendent of the Kosciusko Municipal School District, meets all of the statutory requirements to serve as an interim superintendent.”

“I believe that this is the best course of action for the school board given the current ambiguities of the Miss. Code Ann. § 37-9-13(b), the Attorney General’s opinions on the statute and the administrative regulations adopted by the Mississippi Department of Education establishing an alternative route for qualifications of superintendents and interim superintendents,” added Waldrop.

Luckett recently served as interim principal of Nichols Middle School at the request of former superintendent Cassandra Williams. In just six months, Luckett stabilized the school, improving its culture and climate and moved it from an “F” to a “D”. This helped the district’s overall rating go from an “F” to a “D” rating.

However, during his tenure as the superintendent, he moved the district to a “Successful” or “ C”  rating for the first and only time in its history.
