JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

A celebration was held in Jackson Thursday as a historical marker is unveiled at the home of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

The National Park Service presented the new plaque during a dedication ceremony held outside the Evers house on Margaret Walker Alexander Drive in Jackson.

This officially marks the site as a National Historic Landmark.

It's one of five in Mississippi recognized on the list for its historical significance and role in the nation's history.

"With this special distinction my father's legacy and so many others continues," said Reena Evers-Everette.

Efforts are also underway to get national monument status for the Medgar Evers home.
