JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Charles Hughes, a 51-year-old black man, died Saturday, May 19, 2018, after being shot six days earlier on Culbertson Avenue, according to Jackson police.
JPD Sergeant Roderick Holmes said Hughes had been shot in the abdomen on Mother's Day, May 13, and paramedics transported him to the hospital for surgery.
Hughes remained in critical condition until his death.
Investigators determined that Rico Deon Spires shot Hughes, though the motive behind the shooting is not known.
Spires surrendered to JPD May 20 and has now been charged with murder.
