On South Street in Jackson, orange barrels are warning drivers of a missing manhole cover. People tell us it has been like this for more than two years and this isn't the only missing cover in the city.
On Friday, a viewer alerted us to another missing manhole cover. This one was located at Old Canton Road and Old Canton Lane.
Residents say an orange barrel has replaced the manhole cover for a year at that spot. We looked in the hole and saw the cover, broken in half in the bottom of a storm drain.
It's right in the middle of a lane of traffic. Cars have to veer over into the turn lane to avoid it. People who drive this stretch of road say they've had some near misses, and they worry that the barrel could be hit or moved, which could lead to another serious accident.
"I'm concerned we're gonna have another bad accident probably now with the loss of life but with damage to automobiles and potential for who knows what," said Buddy Graham. "When it's down to needing a cover for a manhole why would it take a month."
On Friday afternoon, the City of Jackson came out to the Old Canton Road location and replaced that missing manhole cover. Residents in the area say they are relieved, but fear other missing manhole covers will still pose a danger until they are replaced.
