JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -

A Jackson Academy senior died in a car crash on Ridgewood Road just one day before she was set to graduate.

According to a post on St. Mark's youth group page, Frances Fortner was driving to graduation practice at Christ United Methodist Church when she hit an uncovered manhole and flipped her mother's convertible.

The crash happened on Ridgewood Road near Venetian Way. Jackson police says it appears that the vehicle may have hit an obstruction in the roadway before overturning.

Jackson Academy released a statement saying:

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of one of our Jackson Academy senior students, Frances Anne Fortner, who was to graduate Friday evening. News like this breaks our hearts, and our entire community of students, educators, and families, is grieving along with her family at this terrible loss.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and city officials were on the scene of the deadly wreck. He released a statement saying:

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Miss Frances Fortner. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and classmates of this young lady whose life was taken too soon. We are conducting a full investigation of the accident. More information will become available pending the outcome of the investigation.

They also put barrels back out around repatched manholes to protect drivers.

A woman who witnessed the crash told our cameras that she was, tragically, not surprised that something like this happened. She said that previously, another woman damaged her car when she hit the same manhole and that it was not properly repaired after that incident.
