JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Elliot Reed, a 30-year-old man, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018, after a shootout with a police officer during a traffic stop, according to the Jackson Police Department.
JPD Sgt. Roderick Holmes said it happened sometime after 1 a.m. at the Valero gas station on Cooper Road.
The officer, whose name has not been released, approached the driver and passenger of a white SUV.
At some point, shots were fired from both the suspects and the officer.
Reed was critically injured during the shooting and transported to the hospital where he died later that day.
The second suspect involved is identified as 26-year-old, Chauncy Reed.
Police took Reed into custody at the scene was arrested and charged him with aggravated assault on a police officer and capital murder.
The officer did not sustain any serious injuries during the incident.
Holmes said the investigation is being conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
