63-yr-old leads Richland police on chase, flips car after stealing meat from Kroger

RICHLAND, MS (WLBT) -

A 63-year-old man lead Richland police on a chase after stealing meat from Kroger. 

Around 7:02 p.m. Wednesday, Richland police were called to the Kroger for a theft. A 63-year-old man had stolen meat and police stopped the car he and the driver were in on Scarbrough Street. After police got out of their cars to confront the man, the suspects' car took off.

The car belonged to 63-year-old John Newell (the shoplifter) and it was driven by 67-year-old Burnell Hamlin. 

Newell stole an undisclosed amount of meat from the Kroger in Richland.

Police chased the men onto Old Hwy 49 North, where the vehicle flipped across from fire station #1. 

Hamlin will be transported to Rankin County and will be charges with one count of felony fleeing and eluding. Newell was transported to the VA and has pending shoplifting charges 

Hamlin and Newell's last known address is Valley Street in Jackson.
