Rankin County voters have approved a $178 million school bond by a wide margin. 74-percent of the voters, or 9,375, voted in favor; 26% or 3,325 voted against.
The Rankin County School District is the third-largest in the state. The bond issue will raise money primarily for new classrooms, to get students out of portables. Other components include upgrades to safety, fine arts, and buildings.
The biggest item is a new Northwest Rankin High School, estimated to cost 42-million dollars.
The overall 178-million dollar bond is a long-term investment in 28 schools.
