After a short trip to the hospital, the man who was caught Tuesday morning driving a stolen car connected to a carjacking and armed robbery is in police custody.
Twenty four year-old Lexus Russell was taken to U.M.M.C. with minor injuries after resisting arrest and fighting police in West Jackson.

It all started around 1:00 a.m. when Russell dodged a police checkpoint at the intersection of Prentiss and St. Charles in a stolen white Dodge Charger.

"The officers noticed that this matched the description of a recently carjacked vehicle," said JPD Commander Tyree Jones.

Jones says Russell is connected to the crime. The Charger was stolen during a carjacking and armed robbery at McDowell Road and Gallatin Street on July 12th.

"This person was ordered out of their vehicle at gunpoint, they were robbed for their personal belongings as well," said Jones.

Officers surrounded the area around the checkpoint and caught up with Russell at Eastview and Central Streets.

"He jumped out of the vehicle armed with a gun and he fled from officers on foot, the officers initiated foot pursuit behind this individual. They were able to take him into custody in this particular area," said Jones.

Russell faces numerous charges and remains in JPD custody. Police say another individual is also connected to the July 12th carjacking and armed robbery.
