RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) -

Rankin County's jail overcrowding problem gets a temporary fix as expansions get underway.

According to Sheriff Bryan Bailey, the facility has run out of space twice in the last year for female inmates, while the need to separate others is causing overcrowding.

MEMA has donated two Katrina Cottages and the Rankin County School Board has donated a portable classroom to temporarily hold low risk prisoners.

The Board of Supervisors has approved the construction of a new addition to hold 100 inmates.

"We're just gonna put them behind the jail, put a fence around them, put cameras in them, a fire alarm and sprinklers and again these will be used for minimum security inmates, trusties," Sheriff Bailey said.

The concrete minimum security facility expansion should be completed next year.
