NEW ALBANY, MS (WLBT) -

A state trooper narrowly escaped injuries Saturday night when his vehicle was struck by a distracted driver.

MHP TroopF of New Albany tweeted a photo of the trooper's badly damaged vehicle.

MHP Corporal Eric Henry said the unidentified trooper was aiding a stranded pedestrian on I-22, near New Albany, at approximately 8:30 p.m, when the crash occurred.

Henry said the trooper was standing at the rear of his vehicle when he noticed a truck running off the road and driving towards him. The trooper ran out of the way as the Ford F-250 collided into his patrol unit.

The driver of the vehicle was cited for careless driving and failing to move over. He admitted to being on his cell phone.

There were only minor injuries reported from the crash.
