There was singing and praise as hundreds packed Salem M.B. Church in Terry, Saturday, to celebrate the 100th birthday of a respected and admired woman of the community.

Mrs. Myrtle Penn Gibson will reach the century mark on Sunday July 17th.

She and deceased husband Charlie Gibson have 12 children.

Family and friends paid tribute to the homemaker, known as "Mother" to her children and everyone in her neighborhood, with song and the presentation of flowers.

Family members tell us Gibson is alert with an excellent memory and she is described as a woman of few words, who demanded respect and taught good morals to the neighborhood children who gathered on her front porch almost daily.

"She's one who's given directions, always positive," said daughter Mozella Gibson. "I mean she's my mother, but I'm gonna say she's a lady who you can truly say that never any problems with being negative."

Longevity runs in Mrs. Gibson's family. Her older sister is 107.

The 100th Birthday program was followed by a reception at the church fellowship hall.
