Eric joined WLBT in October 2004 and currently is the Meteorologist for all of WLBT's weekend newscasts, including; the WLBT Morning Show from 6-7am on Saturday and Sunday, the Saturday 6PM and 10PM Reports, and the Sunday 5PM, 10PM, and 10:30PM Reports. Eric can also be seen on WLBT 24/7, our 24-hour weather channel. Eric is also instrumental in our severe weather coverage and he fills-in for both Barbie Bassett and Paul Williams when they are off. When you don't see Eric on the air, he is likely working behind the scenes keeping all of the weather equipment in the WLBT Weather Lab running smooth and making sure the most up-to-date software is installed. Eric also frequently gives weather talks at schools, churches, businesses, and other organizations. If you are interested in having Eric visit your group, send him an e-mail.
Prior to joining WLBT, Eric worked at KSWO-TV in Lawton, Oklahoma for almost three years. While in Oklahoma, Eric was the morning Meteorologist and also a storm chaser for the station. He experienced all types of severe weather; including several tornadoes, 90 mph winds, baseball sized hail, along with ice and snow storms. Eric also helped produce, edit and anchor the station's annual awarding-winning severe weather show, The Fifth Season.
Eric was born and raised in Danville, Virginia, which is on the border with North Carolina, so he claims both states as "home." Since the age of 4, he knew he wanted to be a meteorologist. Eric got his interest in weather by watching clouds, and quickly became interested in tornadoes and hurricanes. While in grade school, Eric would draw weather maps on paper and present a weather report to his class. In high school he became a weather watcher for not one, but two TV stations.
Eric went to college at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. During his college years, Eric interned at WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina. In May 2002, Eric graduated UNCA with a B.S. in Atmospheric Science with an emphasis in Weather Forecasting. Eric is a member of the American Meteorological Society and has been awarded the prestigious Seal of Approval by the AMS. Eric is also a member of the National Weather Association.
Eric and his wife, Kristina, live in Ridgeland. One thing you may be surprised to know is that the couple actually met in a Christian Internet chat room 10 years ago. One year later, Eric flew from North Carolina to Illinois (Kristina's home state) to meet her in person for the first time. After a lot of traveling to see each other and countless high phone bills, they were married in December 2003.
Eric says that he owes all of his success to God, his mom, his wife, and the teachers he had throughout his early schooling years. Without their love and support, he would have never been able to accomplish his dreams.
In his spare time, Eric enjoys watching TV, especially any Law & Order episode. He also enjoys gardening, storm chasing, surfing the Internet, and attending Mississippi Braves games. Most importantly he enjoys spending time with family.
On June 11, 2006, Eric and his wife were victims in a near fatal car wreck. A stolen SUV, being chased by the Jackson Police Department, crashed into them at more than 70 mph in south Jackson. Both Laws were severely injured, but believe God saved them. "We know He has something big for us to do or we would not be here." Eric was out of work on disability for the 3 months following the wreck, but is now happy to be back at work doing a job he loves. The Laws have learned a lot from this tragic event and hope to be a voice for others who have been victims of career criminals.
Eric likes to hear from viewers, so feel free to send him an e-mail at elaw@wlbt.com. You can also follow Eric on Twitter at @EricLawWLBT. Eric maintains a weather blog which you can view by clicking here.
