MARIETTA, GA (SouthernLeague.com) – The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for July 4 through 10. Lefthander Josh Taylor of the Mobile BayBears was selected as Pitcher of the Week, while Mississippi Braves infielder Ozzie Albies earned Player of the Week honors.
As far as debuts go, it’s hard to beat the one turned in by Mobile pitcher Josh Taylor last week. In his first Southern League appearance, the southpaw tossed a nine-inning, complete game shutout. In a 10-0 victory over Pensacola on July 5, Taylor allowed just three hits, while striking out five Blue Wahoos. The Georgia College and State University product followed with seven innings of one-run ball on July 10. In Mobile’s 6-1 victory over Mississippi, the Phoenix, Arizona native allowed eight hits, while fanning five. Over his first 16 innings and two wins at the Double-A level, Taylor has not walked a single batter.
Since his return to Mississippi and a move to second base two weeks ago, Ozzie Albies has been frustrating Southern League pitchers. Over seven games played last week, Albies hit safely in each contest, while recording multi-hit games in five. The Willemstad, Curacao native produced a .448 batting average with seven runs, 13 hits, three extra-base hits, 19 total bases, a double, a triple, a homerun, four RBI, four walks and a pair of stolen bases. His most consistent performance came in the Braves 3-2 win over Montgomery on July 7, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, two walks and a stolen base. The 19-year old capped his week with a three-hit night on July 10. Over 33 Southern League games this season, Albies holds a .397 batting average on 52 hits.
