A Canton family is accusing police of a cover-up after their loved one died in police custody. Carlos Brown was caught stealing a patrol car. WLBT obtained video of Brown in the patrol car.

“From what I am looking at our officers acted properly,” said Canton Mayor Arnel Bolden.

Mayor Bolden is defending his officers after claims they could be hiding something after cell phone video surfaced of resident Carlos Brown sitting in a squad car.

Police said over the weekend they were responding to a fight here at the Roberts Social Club in Canton when Brown took the car for a joy ride.  But what happened when the cell phone camera stopped rolling is a mystery to the family.

“No guns were drawn, they attempted to arrest the suspect in a non-hostile manner,” said Bolden.

But Brown’s mom, Preshery Brown, said she heard a different story.

“They said when they unlocked the door I guess they sprayed the mace. When they pulled him out the car he passed out,” said Brown’s mom.

She claims her son was armed.  In fact, he was on dialysis at the time of the incident.

“I think if they sprayed him with mace, I am thinking it cut off his breath and it might have chocked him to death,” said Mrs. Brown.

Now she and her family are demanding to see the surveillance video from Saturday, something they said the police won't give up.

“I can’t put him to rest, I can’t rest. I am up all night because I want to know what happen to my son,” said Brown. “If they are so clear why not show us the tape show us that tape, we want that tape.”

The mayor said he has seen the surveillance footage, but everything has now been turned over to Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

“One of the concern is to make sure that our officers acted properly and that this is a trend that does not parallel some of the other incidents that have happened around the country,” Said Mayor Bolden.
