A wanted suspect is dead following an encounter with U.S. Marshals at a trailer in southern Hinds county. It happened on Midway road, near Owens road, shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The Mississippi Highway patrol says members of the US Marshals Taskforce were serving a warrant and clearing a trailer, where a wanted man was said to be held up, when they encountered him, which led to a gunfight.

"Upon searching and clearing the house they were calling the suspects name," said Corporal Eric Henry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. "The suspect came out of the closet with a shotgun. Shots were fired. The suspect is later deceased. Right now everything is preliminary."

Hundreds of officers then converged on the scene, including SWAT teams from the highway patrol, Hinds County and the Jackson Police Department, to clear the rest of the house.  The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.  Officials say he was wanted on 3 felony warrants.

"Three charges out of Georgia; one was felony aggravated sodomy, the other a rape charge, and the last charge was a burglary first degree out of the state of Georgia," added Corporal Henry.

Officials say no officers were injured in the incident.

Relatives of the victim spent much of the day prevented from going back to their nearby homes, as the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation gathered evidence at the scene.

"It's been very sad," said Billy Thompson. "My wifes upset, my aunts upset, the whole family is upset behind this.  I don't know what could have went wrong."

Hinds county coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said she had to wait for the tear gas to dissipate before she could retrieve the body.
She tells me he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
