A Jackson police officer shot a suspect Tuesday morning, leaving him hospitalized. The incident happened at Big Boys convenience store on Jayne Avenue and Ellis, around 2:30 Tuesday morning.

Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance says a female officer confronted an irate 40-year-old Dennis Green at the store in the middle of the night.

"She tried to verbally calm him down and that failed," said Vance. "He retrieved a beer bottle and threw it at her."

Vance said the officer fired her gun, striking Green in the arm and buttocks, leaving him hospitalized. The officer was not hurt.

"I've spoken with this officer this morning," said Chief Vance. "She was very upset that she had to use deadly force on this individual but it was a defensive move clearly on her part. She felt attacked and we've seen police officers get hurt or killed by individuals, by suspects who didn't have a weapon."

The Jackson police department is in the process of ordering Tasers for all their officers. Vance says in this case it would have given the officer an option not to use deadly force, something he says the public may criticize his officer for using, but may not fully understand.

Two investigations into the shooting are being conducted, one to see if the officer violated any department policies, another to see if any laws were broken.

"The preliminary reports from both investigations lead me to believe that this is a justified action on the part of the Jackson police officer," said Vance.
